First, let's take a look at the basics:

Here,
a famous magician Charles
Bertram
attempts the first phase of the move
This is the 2nd
step

This is Houdini (Yes, that's him in his
younger years when he was known as the King of Cards!)
As you may know, Houdini was a daredevil. The intricate dangers of Fizbin Drop fascinated him to the point of actually trying it. If you see the original unreleased version of the movie "Houdini" with Tony Curtis, you will see Houdini trying Fizbin Drop. However, Houdini's ego got the best of him. He got a bit too confident during the last phases of the move, and according to the original plot, his untimely demise was due trying Fizbin Drop. Top magicians of the time got very upset. They wanted to keep the move so secret as to prevent it leaking out to the general public. That's why the ending was promptly changed to the unsuccessful Water Torture Cell escape as you know it now in the movie.
On the picture above Houdini is doing the 3rd phase of the move. This is
very difficult. I am continually fascinated with Houdini's skill, as well
as with the originator of the sleight, Fizbin himself. This 3rd phase,
however, is not nearly as difficult as the final phase.
The final phase is the most difficult. It is the phase that magicians fear and admire most. No magician has ever matched Fizbin's successful performance of the sleight. Only two magicians have come close enough to dare to execute the Drop. Unfortunately, they were both rushed to the Hospital, and would not reveal the secret to the media in fear of hurting more people.
